Alexey Semyonov
Organist, harpsichordist, pianist, Alexey Semyonov is an honored artist of Russia, docent of Moscow Conservatory, soloist of the Moscow Philharmonia, Music Director of Early music ensemble "LAD" and founder and the head of Musical festival "The Roots and the Crown".
Semyonov graduated from the organ and harpsichord department of the Moscow Conservatory under Professor L. Roizman and from the piano department with Professor M. Fyodorova. He taught organ in Novosibirsk Conservatory, and later became head of the Moscow Conservatory's post-graduate courses. From 1979 to 1993 Alexey was soloist of the "Madrigal" ensemble where besides organ and harpsichord, he also played on recorder, crumhorns and other period instruments.
In 1986-87 Alexey studied organ playing under Professor H. Haselböck at the Vienna Higher School of Music, attended classes and rehearsals of renowned musicians such as H. Harnoncourt, R. Clemencic, G. Tachezzi and G. Murray. In later years, on Semyonov's invitation, Clemencic frequently appeared in Moscow as conductor and soloist and has played with Semyonov’s ensemble, works by J.S.Bach, Lully, Monteverdi, Sokolovsky, Fux, and other renaissance and medieval music.
In the autumn of 1990, A.Semyonov organized and headed Early Music Ensemble "LAD" (Concord). This collective of authentic direction includes in the performances seldom sounding or for the first time executed compositions. In 1993 the ensemble received the rank of Winner at the International Van Vassenaer competition of authentic ensembles in Amsterdam.
The core of Semyonov's repertoire is made up of works for organ and harpsichord by 16th - 18th century composers - J. S. Bach, Frescobaldi, Purcell, Handel, Buxtehude, Bruhns, Krebs, Luebek, Walter, Boehm, Cabezon, Couperin, Rameau and others. At the same time A. Semyonov also plays music by romanticist composers (Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Reger), Russian Classics (L. Guriliov, Liapunov, Glazunov, Taneyev, Shostakovich), modern music (S. Gubaidullina, A. Schnittke, G. Sedelnikov, S. Zagniy, P. Karmanov) and more.
Among the most interesting projects in recent years:
- "Barock-n-roll": 16th - 18th-century ostinato, dance and meditative music;
- opera "Danaidas" by A. Salieri, first performed in Russia in the year 2000 on the occasion of 250 years of the author's birth, on the stage of the Sheremetyev Theater in Ostankino.

A. Semyonov has recorded two solo organ discs: in the series "A Thousand Year of Music" (Sheidt, Buxtehude, Muffat) and "Russian Organ Music" (L. Guriliov, Taneyev, Liapunov, Shostakovich, Gubaidullina, Shnittke) as well as several discs as a member of the "Madrigal" ensemble with music of European Middle Ages, Renaissance and early Baroque.
